The Vuforia Chalk Alternative & Migration Path
PTC retired Vuforia Chalk on October 31, 2025 and moved customers to ServiceMax Zinc. VSight is the vendor-neutral migration path — AR remote assistance plus digital work instructions on the phones, tablets, browsers and industrial smart glasses your teams already use, with no PTC / Windchill ecosystem lock-in.
Key PTC dates
- Sep 2024 End-of-service announced (over a year's notice)
- Oct 31, 2025 Vuforia Chalk retired — service ended (PTC)
- Now Customers moved to ServiceMax Zinc (PTC SLM portfolio)

What happened to Vuforia Chalk?
A neutral, factual summary of PTC's own published end-of-service information. Each point is verifiable via the PTC sources listed at the end of this page.
- PTC announced in September 2024 that Vuforia Chalk would be retired, with end of service on October 31, 2025.
- Existing customers could use Chalk through October 31, 2025; security updates continued during the transition, but Chalk's feature set was frozen — no new features.
- PTC's recommended path is ServiceMax Zinc, part of its Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) portfolio following PTC's acquisition of ServiceMax.
- PTC offered existing customers the same quantity of Zinc licenses at the same price; highly active accounts get account-manager guidance, others are transitioned automatically.
- PTC cited overlap between Chalk and Zinc — in vision, capabilities and features — after acquiring ServiceMax as the reason for consolidating.
Why evaluate alternatives as you migrate off Chalk?
Migrating to a new tool is the natural moment to compare the field. VSight Remote and VSight Workflow are one of the alternatives Chalk teams can move to — on devices they already own.
Chalk is retired
With end of service on October 31, 2025, Chalk no longer receives feature updates. Teams still on it should plan their next step deliberately.
Zinc is a different product
Moving to ServiceMax Zinc means adopting a new tool inside PTC's SLM stack — a natural moment to evaluate the field openly, not just accept the default.
A chance to drop PLM lock-in
Chalk's full value leaned on the PTC / Windchill ecosystem. An evaluation is the time to decide whether you want that coupling going forward.
Close the workflow gap
Chalk was remote-assist only; structured work instructions came from a separate product (Vuforia Studio). A platform that includes both can simplify your stack.
Vuforia Chalk to VSight: how the capabilities map
VSight Remote is the equivalent of Vuforia Chalk for see-what-I-see video support, and VSight Workflow covers the guided work Chalk handled only through a separate product, Vuforia Studio. Chalk's world-locked spatial annotation is a genuine strength; VSight's edge is including remote assist and work instructions on one vendor-neutral platform.
| Capability | Vuforia Chalk | VSight |
|---|---|---|
| Support status | Retired — end of service Oct 31, 2025; no new features (PTC) | Actively developed and supported on current-generation devices |
| Migration path | PTC moves customers to ServiceMax Zinc — a separate product | Direct migration to VSight Remote + Workflow on the devices you already own |
| See-what-I-see video | Yes | Yes — HD see-what-I-see video & audio with VSight Remote |
| Spatial AR annotation | Yes — world-locked “Chalk Marks” that stay anchored to objects (a signature strength) | Yes — point, draw, arrows, shapes & text on the live or frozen view |
| Desktop screen sharing | Not in Chalk (was on its roadmap, moved to Zinc) | Yes |
| Digital work instructions / SOPs | Handled by a separate product (Vuforia Studio), not Chalk itself | Included — VSight Workflow, no-code instructions, checklists & branching |
| AI capture & copilot | Not a stated Chalk capability | VSight VideoFlow (video-to-instructions) + VSight Nova AI copilot |
| Ecosystem & integrations | Tied to the PTC ecosystem (Windchill, ThingWorx, Creo) | Vendor-neutral; Microsoft Teams, SSO / Entra ID and CRM/ERP via open REST API |
| Devices & smart glasses | iOS, Android, Chrome; RealWear | iOS, Android, browsers + RealWear, Vuzix, Rokid, Moziware, Epson |
| Security & compliance | Not detailed publicly | GDPR & HIPAA compliant, ISO 27001 certified, E2E-encrypted WebRTC |

How do you migrate from Vuforia Chalk to VSight?
A straightforward, scenario-by-scenario move onto a platform that is actively developed and vendor-neutral.
Inventory Chalk usage
List the users, sessions and devices that relied on Vuforia Chalk — and any Vuforia Studio work instructions you depend on.
Map each scenario to VSight
Chalk remote-assist calls map to VSight Remote; Studio work instructions map to VSight Workflow. Note where you can stay on phones, tablets or glasses you own.
Pilot on existing devices
Run one team or one workflow on hardware you already have — phones, tablets, or RealWear/Vuzix glasses — to validate the fit.
Migrate content & integrate
Rebuild instructions in VSight Workflow, train users, and connect Microsoft Teams, SSO / Entra ID and your CRM/ERP via the open REST API.

Vuforia Chalk migration — FAQ
Is Vuforia Chalk being discontinued?
Yes. PTC announced in September 2024 that Vuforia Chalk would be retired, with end of service on October 31, 2025. Customers could use Chalk through that date and continued to receive security updates during the transition, but Chalk's feature set was frozen. PTC moves customers to ServiceMax Zinc, part of its Service Lifecycle Management portfolio. The dates are from PTC's own end-of-service notice, linked below.
What is the best Vuforia Chalk alternative?
VSight is a strong, vendor-neutral Vuforia Chalk alternative. VSight Remote delivers see-what-I-see AR remote assistance in any mobile browser with no app to download, and VSight Workflow adds the digital work instructions that Chalk handled only through a separate product, Vuforia Studio. The platform also includes AI capture (VideoFlow) and an AI copilot (Nova), supports a broad range of industrial smart glasses, and is not tied to the PTC / Windchill ecosystem.
What is PTC replacing Vuforia Chalk with?
PTC directs Chalk customers to ServiceMax Zinc within its Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) portfolio, offering the same quantity of Zinc licenses at the same price. Because Zinc is a separate product rather than a like-for-like Chalk continuation, the migration is a good moment to evaluate alternatives — VSight among them — against your actual requirements.
How do I migrate from Vuforia Chalk to VSight?
In five steps: (1) inventory Chalk usage, users, devices and any Vuforia Studio instructions; (2) map each scenario to its VSight equivalent (Chalk calls to VSight Remote, Studio instructions to VSight Workflow); (3) pilot one team or workflow on devices you already own; (4) migrate content and connect Microsoft Teams, SSO/Entra ID and your CRM/ERP via the open REST API; (5) switch over and retire the Chalk/Zinc dependency.
Does VSight require the PTC or Windchill ecosystem?
No. VSight is vendor-neutral and does not depend on Windchill, ThingWorx or Creo. It integrates with Microsoft Teams, SSO / Microsoft Entra ID and your CRM, ERP or ticketing systems through an open REST API, so you can adopt it without committing to a wider PLM stack.
Does VSight have spatial AR annotation like Chalk's Chalk Marks?
Chalk's world-locked “Chalk Marks”, which stay anchored to physical objects, were a signature strength. VSight provides live AR annotation — point, draw, arrows, shapes and text on the live or frozen view — across mainstream phones, tablets, browsers and industrial smart glasses, with the added benefit of including digital work instructions and AI capture on one platform and no ecosystem lock-in. The best way to compare is to test both on your own equipment.
